Careers in Construction Month, Getting to know Greg Mears

Why did you choose a career in construction?

  • I was fortunate enough to be born into a family with a long generational history in the construction industry. It is both challenging and rewarding.
  • I like to build things and I helped my father build my childhood home, the house I live in today.
  • Since an early age, I was fascinated with construction equipment. When I was a teenager, my parents would come home from church to find that I had moved plants/trees around the yard.

What are your top responsibilities as a General Superintendent?

  • Maintain a safe working environment for the workers, site participants, and our clients.
  • Oversee all aspects of construction in the field to assure adherence to safety, quality, production, schedule, budget, and security. Daily Decision-maker of work priorities.
  • Lead weekly sub-contractor meetings, hold daily coordination meetings among trade partners where at times I’m a Referee and a cheerleader.
  • Maintain good communication with the project stakeholders, anticipate and resolve issues to keep the job moving forward.

Any word of advice to young people considering entering the construction workforce?

  • Never stop learning, Construction is constantly evolving, new products and methods are introduced every day.
  • Be a knowledge sponge to those with more experience around you.
  • Be empathetic, respect individuality, and teamwork.
  • Always maintain and convey a sense of urgency.
  • Know your limits and push them.  Raise the bar and don’t be afraid to ask for advice or help.
  • Understand what it takes to get the job done.
  • Know when to hold em and when to fold em, to try another way.
  • Choose integrity, humbleness, and build on your relationships.
  • Enjoy the sunrise and sunsets, but most of all, have fun and enjoy what you do.

What’s the most unique thing you have done in Construction?

  • I was Part of a team in May 2010 that moved a fully Functional Aircraft from Miami International Airport to the George T. Baker Aviation School across SR 112 and LeJeune Road taking months of planning, countless meetings with several Local, State and Federal Government Authorities that culminated in a flawless move in the middle of the night.
