UM Lennar Foundation Medical Center opened to patients in December of 2016. The project is a state-of-the-art, 4-story building and consisted of the demolition of a sculpture building and its existing utilities and new construction of over 200,000 SF. To allow direct access for patients to the new facility, a conditioned connector bridge was built to the Flipse building and parking garage. Areas in the program include a conference center, Cardio Thoracic Unit (CTU), pharmacy, lab, imaging, interventional platform, LINAC, mechanical room, physical therapy, specialty/clinics, support and administration spaces. Additional scope included a one-story Concrete Masonry Unit (CMU) and structural steel energy plant and relocation of internal roadways and changes to traffic patterns. NV2A Principals and Staff worked closely with the City of Coral Gables throughout the planning, review and inspection process, as well as provided special care to multiple, non-construction related factors. Given the constrained location triangulated by Mark Light Stadium, the Bank Atlantic Center and the Student Wellness Center; the congested traffic signal of Ponce de Leon, Alhambra and US1, and the everyday activity of a live campus, much attention to detail was given to student schedules, Coral Gables traffic, and off-hour events (athletic games, shows, use of Wellness Center) during the planning phases of construction. Arrangements were made to secure off-site subcontractor parking (in nearby Metrorail lots) to keep campus disruption to a minimum, and large deliveries were coordinated around rush hour traffic and peak student commuting times.
